Maneuvering tactics did not prevent the doomed U-662 from sinking. Explosions ruptured the diving tanks and expedited her fate. The PBY circles and fires against U-662. The same fights back fiercely in a desperate attempt to hit the Catalina. Damages inflicted to the PBY. More damages in the fuselage. The picture shows how the PBY was hit in the battle. Wounded Radioman ARM2C J. H. Watson is carefully removed from the Catalina. Shrapnel hit his station causing wounds in his ankles and legs. Life rafts were dropped to the survivors. German survivors aboard life rafts. 2 life rafts and four survivors are seen in the water. Struggling for life the spent 16 days adrift until they were fished out. One man died during that ordeal and one another when aboard USS Siren. Map shows the exact position of the sinking some 70 miles off Amapa State Northern Brazil. |
