During the Second World War, the Motor Launch ML 1077 was a Harbour Defence Motor Launch (HDML) operating under the Royal Navy's South /atlantic Command
Stationed at the strategically vital port of Freetown, Sierra Leone, its primary roles included:
Escort and Coastal Defense Duties:ML 1077 was deployed to protect regional shipping from Axis threats, primarily German U-boats. A documented example of its operational history includes joining the armed trawler HMS Fandango and sister ship ML 1076 to successfully escort the merchant vessel S.S. Empire Limba safely into Freetown.
Harbour and Seaward Patrols: As an HDML, the vessel was designed to safeguard coastal anchorages, monitor local waterways, perform anti-submarine screening, and provide localized defense for the critical wartime convoy staging hub at Freetown.
