St. Zeno was based at Freetown West Africa since the war outset. In 10 Feb 1943 St Zeno rescued 18 survivors from SS Queen Anne sunk by U- U 509 on pos. 34º 53”S 19º 51”E and landed at Capetown. Other 22 survivors made landfall at Bredasdorp near Cape Agulhas. Queen Anne was loaded with 6126 tons of government stores and 698 tons of general cargo, including explosives. The master, two crew members and two gunners were lost.
