During World War II, the Naval Auxiliary Boat (NAB) Valiant was stationed at the Freetown, Sierra Leone naval base as part of the Royal Navy's West Africa Command.
Operating in a vital strategic hub for Allied transatlantic shipping, its primary roles included:
Local Patrol and Harbor Defense: Monitoring the waters surrounding the natural harbor of Freetown to protect anchored merchant vessels and military assets from Axis submarine threats or infiltration.
Tender and Logistical Support: Ferrying personnel, communication dispatches, and essential supplies between larger warships (such as the depot ship HMS Philoctetes), shore installations (like the workshops at Kissy or King Tom), and the massive convoys passing through the South Atlantic.
Inshore Security: Assisting the base command in maintaining maritime safety, managing traffic within the heavily crowded anchorage, and handling localized tasks that larger fleet vessels could not perform in shallow waters.
