Naval Auxiliary Boat (NAB) Vixen served as a specialized minor war vessel assigned to the Royal Navy’s South Atlantic station at Freetown, Sierra Leone, during World War II.
Operating within the crowded and tactically critical natural harbor of Freetown, the Vixen had a specific set of local defense and support responsibilities:
Convey Support and Communications: Servicing the massive Allied convoys arriving from the UK, Americas, and South Africa by couriering high-priority naval dispatches, sailing orders, and commanding officers between ships and the Freetown shore command.
Harbor Security and Anti-Infiltration: Conducting close-range water patrols around the anchorage to guard against potential Axis sabotage, espionage, or covert surface operations targeted at vulnerable merchant ships.
Fleet Assistance: Providing local tender support to larger fleet assets stationed at the port (such as the base depot ship HMS Philoctetes) by shuttling essential personnel, gear, and minor logistics across shallow coastal waters where deep-draft vessels could not navigate.
