Enroute to New York via Capetown and Trinidad, SS California was torpedoed and shelled by the submarine deck gun almost 50 times. Despite strenuous efforts by the helmsman to avoid being hit, the ship came to a full stop and crewmembers abandoned in two lifeboats with 19 men in each boat. A heavy storm at the first night separated the boats. On 4 Sep U-459 comes across one boat containing 19 survivors and provides rations (brown bread, water, rum and tobacco) and navigational assistance before departing although Kapitan Willamowitz-Mollendorf denying to tow the lifeboat once the u-boat would sail surfaced for a long time and could attract any allied vessel or aircraft. 


On 5 Sep British steamship City of Capetown rescues 19 survivors. Men are exhausted but rations provided by German U boat helped them to endure. They were landed in New York On 14 Sep Norwegian steamship Talisman rescues the last 18 survivors (one of the original 19 has succumbed to exposure during the 32-day ordeal. One man, the chief engineer died from exposure. They were landed at Takoradi.
