Propulsion two 2,880 bhp Hooven-Owen-Rentschler R-99DA diesel engines (Serial No. 6674 and 6675), Westinghouse single reduction gear, two shafts.


She served with distinction in the Caribbean and South Atlantic Sea Frontiers, under Fourth Fleet based at Recife Brazil, and kept in constant activity in ASW duties and convoy escorts in the early part of the war (1942-44).USS PC-489, a 173-foot submarine chaser, was built at Brooklyn, New York. She was commissioned in mid-July 1942 and served in the Atlantic and Caribbean area through the rest of World War II. PC-489 was decommissioned in December 1945 and sold in 1948.
