Brazilian newspapers reported the secret meeting between the two Presidents."Brazilian President Mr. Getulio Vargas set for Natal, when the President of the United States of América Mr. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was returning to Washington from the Casablanca Conference with British Prime Minister Winston Spencer Churchill".


President Getúlio Vargas spent the night in US Navy Destroyer USS Jouett waiting for US president who was returning from Casablanca, French Morocco, where he sponsored a conference with the Allied leaders on the development of the war. Upon the departure of the US president’s Martin Mariner, President Vargas welcomed the national and international journalists to give his impressions on the meeting.


"The allied countries are prepared for a long war", so we are not keeping an exaggerated optimism, once we can expect the unpredictability in this war. And added: Brazil cooperates with the U.S. in everything deemed as needed for the war effort.
Once we are in this war, our cooperation with the
United States must be integral.“All that the United States regards as necessary and useful, we will continue to provide.”


Both Presidents lunched together and during the afternoon they inspected Brazilian US Army, Navy and Air Force garrisons. The same changed standpoints over the problems involving allied forces in the war and in particular on the joint efforts of the two nations. They agreed on the necessity of enhancing security measures to be adopted in order to turn the Atlantic Ocean as a free shipping lanes for all nations.


German military power is evidently drooping. Nevertheless we work as we must do in view of such emergencies, aiming for a longer conflict". He stressed the urgency in winning the fight and highlighted the Brazilian cooperation in all fields with the U.S., and in that sense, it will be integral, with no restrictions.


President Roosevelt returned satisfied with the results attained at the meeting.Despite the rigorous safety measures adopted by the security forces on the secret meeting, the motorcade when in its run through the streets of Natal was cheered by the people on the streets.Following the talks, which cemented relations between the countries and provided for closer naval cooperation, President Vargas departed Destroyer Jouett 29 January.
